As a Communication Studies major, there is a lot I can get into in the job world. I could go into advertising, journalism, PR and more. I chose to do my concentration in interpersonal and organizational communication as well as take a few marketing classes to see if I was interested. Sure enough, the first internship that sounded perfect to me was a PR/Marketing internship at Women & Children’s Hospital of Buffalo. I have been around the medical field most of my life so as odd as some people think it is, I would absolutely LOVE to work in a hospital when I graduate.

My first couple of weeks at the hospital were so many things: amazing, eye-opening, invigorating and even fun! My supervisor has been in the PR field for about as long as I’ve been on this Earth, so it is really an honor to be able to work under someone who knows so much more than I.  You can bet I am taking every chance I get to ask him questions and get his opinions. He has given me many different things to work on, and what’s awesome is that it is actually my work. It’s not like I write something, give it to him for review and then he changes it all. I have written a couple of press releases on fundraising events for the new hospital coming in 2016. Basically, my supervisor gives me the information on the event, I write something up with all the details and a headline and then we go over it together.  He’ll share his opinions on changes or suggest re-wording things, but then he lets me change it the way I want to. I have also done some posts on Employees of the Month for the Kaleida intranet, sat in on meetings and communication rounds and most importantly learned a lot about the hospital about which I’m writing.

I was extremely hesitant about pursuing an internship because I was worried about time management and if I would even enjoy it. I can honestly say this is the best decision I have made in my college career and I cannot wait to see what exciting things I get to work on while I am here! Everyone is so kind and more than helpful when I have questions, and I look forward to learning and growing in the field that I hope to continue in.
