This semester, I am working as the Goin’ Bald for Bucks social media intern at Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s Alliance Foundation. Goin’ Bald for Bucks is a program where individuals, groups, and schools sign up to raise money for cancer research and patient care, culminating in an event where participants shave their heads. As the social media intern, I’m responsible for creating and implementing a social media plan that will effectively promote Bald for Bucks events. I also help out with preparations for the events when needed.

Before beginning my internship, I was somewhat apprehensive. I had never worked in an office environment before and I was not sure what to expect. On the first day, I took the subway down to Roswell Park and nervously entered the office building. Upon arrival, I met my supervisor, Andrea, and my fears immediately dissipated. She was extremely friendly and made me feel welcome. That first day, Andrea walked me around the enormous medical campus and explained the mission of Roswell Park and how Goin’ Bald for Bucks fits in with that mission. It was really cool to know that I was a part of such a fantastic cause.

Since starting my internship, I have had some fun and exciting experiences in addition to working in the office. A few weeks ago, five members of the Buffalo Sabres went bald and I was able to help with the event and see how everything works. It was amazing to see all the time and effort that goes into these events. I’m looking forward to attending even more Goin’ Bald for Bucks events around Buffalo!
