I intern over at UB South campus in Squire Hall, home of the UB Dental School! While there is a whole lot of dentistry going on, there are also plenty of tasks for Digital Media Arts people going on as well. My internship supervisor, Jay, is the head Digital Media Technician, who takes care of advertising posters, promotional videos, projects for other researchers and doctors, photography, and more. Each day is different with him, as he is always presented with different tasks. This past week was no different, except that there were cookies involved!

My big task this week was to work on an animated video in Adobe After Effects and Final Cut Pro to display on TVs throughout the building. These videos were meant to advertise what the Dental School is all about. I worked on one earlier in the semester that was focused on research. This time though, I made an animated video on the Dental School’s community outreach efforts. It was bright, colorful, had happy music, and displayed a good sense of what the dentistry program was trying to do within the community. The good part about making this video was it is something to add to my portfolio. The bad part about making this video was the computer itself. Digital artists are not patient when it comes to how long it takes for a computer to render out video projects or animations. So, my days consisted of getting to my internship, editing my video, and then setting it to render when I went to leave. That way, my time was not being wasted by sitting around and waiting for it to finish. Instead, Jay let the computer run throughout the day and night till it finished rendering without me there. The next day I would show up and be able to start working on it again. Luckily, it’s all done now and I think it turned out great!

With big tasks come smaller, interesting tasks that I am assigned to do. One of the departments in the building was having a bake sale and wanted photos taken of all of the pies and cookies. The baked goods were being sold, too, to raise money. There were multiple cookie trays and pies because they were holding a competition! So I got to go up and take some photos of the various pies and cookies for them, and with that came some free cookie testing. Everyone who knows me knows I love food, and that anytime I get food during a project, it is time well spent.
