Some faculty members have asked us about Google Apps and FERPA and we thought we’d highlight the answer here.
In our Google User Agreement, we are protected by FERPA. Google Drive is essentially an extension of Canisius.
In their Google Apps for Education agreement, Google is held responsible for FERPA:
“Google will be considered a “School Official” (as that term is used in FERPA and its implementing regulations) and will comply with FERPA.” Just like D2L, they declare that they won’t use student data for commercial purposes https://www.google.com/edu/trust/#does-google-sell-school-data-to-third-parties
